There are a lot of inaccuracies in this tutorial. For example, the sampling is actually related to how accurate the texture will be mixed into the color, the mix is not the opacity, but the algorithm used to mix the color with the rest of the shader, Luminance is the self-ilumination (you can make things glow, especially if you render with GI), specular is really the way the highlights form on the object, and so on.
The tutorial is cool, but I feel that is poorly researched. Keep it up, though!
